Greek Mythology for Kids: Reading and Writing Workshop, Grades 5-6
February 17, 24; March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; April 7
8 class sessions, 1.5 hour per class
Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. PST (12 hours)
Course Description:
Do you want to be a “Titan” of a writer? Someone who has the “Midas Touch”? If you want your writing to be a “Siren’s Song” to readers, then Greek Mythology for Kids: Reading and Writing Workshop is the class for you!
In this 8-week course, you will explore engaging, interactive learning activities where you can develop your writing skills and explore exciting, adventurous stories about gods, goddesses, and heroes from ancient Greece.
Lessons will focus on plot, theme, figurative language, writing organization and structure, research skills, the 6 Traits of Writing, and the Writing Process.
Some of the writing activities will include the following:
With lessons and strategies you learn in this class, writing won’t be a “Herculean Effort” or a tangled Labyrinth anymore. You will surely become a writing Olympian!
Instructor Biography:
Mrs. Tarkoff has been a fellow of the UCI Writing Project since 2006 and brings twenty years of experience as a middle school language arts teacher and school administrator. A National Board Certified Teacher, her background includes a Master’s in Education and multiple certifications in teacher leadership and Gifted and Talent Education. Most recently, O.C. Parenting Magazine honored her as an O.C. Top Teacher of the Year, and she was recognized as an Orange County Department of Education Teacher of the Year Finalist. Her main goal as an educator is to foster a love of learning in her students by engaging them in motivating, real-world learning activities that stimulate them to higher levels of critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.

- Greek Olympian Mascot Persuasive Writing Challenge
- Greek God and Goddess Trading Cards
- Allusions in Mythology
- Create Your Own Myth, Comic Book/Graphic Novel
