A Journey Through Narrative Writing, Grades 5-6

Course Description:
People tell stories all of the time: at the dinner table, on a social media post, and when sharing between friends. But sometimes it's harder to get those stories written on paper. The blank screen can be intimidating, or the dialogue doesn't sound quite right. This course can help you write stories by studying good models and imitating what those writers do. There will be a combination of structured lessons and workshop time so that you can practice and grow as a writer. Along the way you will discover your own voice and style.

Instructor Biography:
Mickie Hazlewood has enjoyed working in education for over 25 years. She has master's degrees in both Educational Technology and Advanced Teaching. In 2023, Ms. Hazlewood was bestowed the honor of District Teacher of the Year in the Paramount Unified School District. She is GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) certified. She has taught most grade levels between kindergarten and eighth grade, but currently works in reading intervention and loves it. When teaching students of any age, she finds that everyone connects to stories. Stories are a vital part of our human experience.
