Course Description:
Welcome to “Your Opinion Matters: The Road to Argument Writing,” an exciting online course through the UCI Young Writers Program! This course will teach 3rd & 4th grade students to write compelling opinion pieces by clearly expressing their ideas, supporting them with reasons and evidence, and building foundational argument-writing skills. Through collaborative discussions and engaging activities, students will learn to persuade their peers with the power of their writing.

Instructor Biography:
Alicia Kuhn Piantanida is an educator with a strong background and passion for teaching literacy and writing to young learners. She has taught 1st grade, 3rd grade, and K-6 Reading Intervention. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Child & Adolescent Development from California State University, Fullerton and a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from University of California, Irvine. Alicia is excited to work with 3rd and 4th grade students this session to help students develop their writing skills and a life-long passion for writing.

- Students will be able to state a clear and strong opinion. They will identify topics that they care about and express their opinions in a structured, focused manner.
- Students will learn to support their opinions with logical reasoning and evidence. They will use personal experiences, facts, and examples to strengthen their argument.
- Students will be able to organize their thoughts in graphic organizers to better structure their arguments.
- Students will practice editing and revising skills to improve writing quality.
