Video Storytelling for a Cause, Grades 3-6
15 class sessions, 2 hours per class (30 hours of instruction)

Course Description:
Persuasive writing is a powerful skill for young writers and a compelling idea combined with thoughtful video, images and sound can inspire change in a community or bring awareness to causes in need of a champion! In this 4-week course, young writers will use intermediate video production skills to create videos that inform, persuade and advocate. Beginning with a Book Trailer project that will challenge crewmates to build interest in a favorite book with the beginning, middle and a tease of the ending. Students will build new writing and video production skills for a cause with the PSA: Public Service Announcement project and create a video story that informs, advocates & calls an audience to action!
This workshop is designed for success with Apple iMovie on iPad and MacBook. WeVideo for Chromebook or PC is also supported but may require a separate subscription.
Instructor Biography:
Frank Guttler, Director of Programs for Lights, Camera, Learn! is a graduate of the California State University, Northridge School of Cinema & Television. He is an accomplished educator and digital storytelling and media arts expert, with nearly two decades of experience in connecting educators with technology, literacy, and filmmaking. He was recruited by the American Film Institute (AFI) to develop a groundbreaking curriculum for AFI's K-12 Screen Education Center, making the tools and processes and filmmakers accessible to educators of all subjects and grade levels. Frank has also led filmmaking workshops and seminars for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Apple Distinguished Educators, Discovery Educator Network, and Google Teacher Academy.
