UCI Writing Project's Programs for Youth
UCI Writing Project's central mission is to improve student writing and learning by improving the teaching of writing. In 1978, UCI established a Writing Project in the Department of Education and launched its first Summer Institute focusing on professional development for teachers. In 1980, UCI became the first California and National Writing Project to expand its outreach directly to students through the creation of a Summer Youth Program (SYP) in which teacher-experts in reading and writing instruction offered a variety of literacy classes to students going into grades 1-12. Over the years, the UCI Writing Project has served over 35,000 students globally.
In 2020, the Summer Youth Program went virtual in order to continue its literacy support to students during the pandemic. Over 600 students participated in this online program, which received outstanding reviews from both students and parents. Based on this feedback and at the request of many parents, the UCI Writing Project is now extending its literacy support to students during the school year through a newly created Virtual Program for Youth (VPY). VPY is now in its fourth year with the 2023-2024 academic year.
We invite certified and credentialed instructors who share the same passion for teaching and improving their teaching of writing to apply for the Summer Youth Program and the Virtual Programs for Youth. More detailed information is provided below.
